Fitness Testing 101

The DRVN Fitness Testing system is designed to answer a simple but equally critical question:
How much physical capacity does this golfer have to support the swing they're trying to make?
Not just once. Not just when they're fresh. But repeatedly, under speed, load, and fatigue — across practice sessions, rounds, and training blocks.
Where the Mobility Assessment tells us whether the body can access key positions, Fitness Testing tells us whether the body can sustain, express, and repeat them.
Why Fitness Testing Matters
Golf is not just a movement problem — it's a capacity problem.
A golfer may be able to reach the right positions, but if they lack the strength, power, speed, or endurance to support those positions, the swing will eventually break down. This is where inconsistency, plateaus, and injury risk begin to show up.
The DRVN Fitness Testing system gives you a fast, standardized way to understand the golfer's physical readiness — not in abstract gym terms, but in direct relation to the demands of the golf swing.
It doesn't diagnose in a medical sense. Instead, it provides clarity — about physical limits, performance ceilings, and how prepared the body is to do the work you're asking of it.
How the Physical Demands of Golf Are Broken Down
Rather than testing fitness in isolation, the DRVN system organizes physical capacity around five core domains that directly influence swing performance. Each domain represents a key requirement for expressing speed, control, and resilience in golf.
- Strength → Force Production & Load Tolerance (Deadlift): The body's ability to accept and control force through the ground and trunk.
- Power → Explosive Output (Bench Press): How quickly force can be applied — critical for clubhead speed and ball speed.
- Speed → Movement Velocity (Club Head Speed): The nervous system's ability to move limbs rapidly and sequence efficiently.
- Endurance → Repeated Output (Run or Bike): The capacity to maintain movement quality and power across time and volume.
- Athleticism → Coordination & Control (Broad Jump): The ability to organize strength and speed into usable, repeatable motion.
Each of these domains contributes to how well a golfer can express the swing they're capable of on paper — not just in ideal conditions, but in real play.
How Scoring Works
Fitness Testing uses the same simple, standardized framework as the Mobility Assessment. Each of the five fitness domains is scored on a one-to-five scale, producing a total Fitness Score out of 25.
This helps identify:
- physical strengths that can be leveraged,
- capacity gaps that are limiting performance,
- and areas where training emphasis will deliver the greatest return.
Just as importantly, it creates a shared reference point between coach, trainer, and golfer — removing guesswork and replacing it with aligned decision-making.
How Fitness and Mobility Work Together
Fitness Testing does not stand alone. It pairs directly with the Mobility Assessment to form the Golf Fitness Handicap.
- Mobility answers: Can the body get into the right positions?
- Fitness answers: Can the body support and repeat those positions under demand?
Together, they provide a complete picture of physical readiness — one that explains why certain swing limitations persist and where progress is most likely to come from.
What This Unlocks for Coaching and Training
With Fitness Testing in place, training decisions become clearer and more effective. You can:
- match loading and intensity to actual capacity,
- avoid pushing speed or power before the body can support it,
- and progress golfers more confidently without unnecessary breakdown.
Rather than guessing how "fit" a golfer is, you're working from a structured understanding of what their body can currently handle — and what it's ready to build next.
Closing Thought
Good training starts with clear information.
The DRVN Fitness Testing system gives you that clarity — quickly, consistently, and in a way that directly supports better swings, smarter training, and more durable progress.
That's why it sits alongside mobility at the core of the DRVN system.
