· auto-generatedWhat's going on, guys? Welcome back to the channel. Today, we're going to activate the lats.
All right, so a lot of the talk in terms of speed, distance, the actual swing itself is about how we use the ground, how we create force and speed by working that leverage, getting the hips fired, and everything lower body, okay? A certain dude who kind of gets out and talks a little bit has now kind of introduced the idea of the lats, the upper body, and how force is created there. And everybody knew that within the kinematic sequence, obviously, the torso and the upper body delivers a lot of force.
However, we want to look in specifically on how to do so, all right? So, we're talking about the lats. Big muscles down the side of your back, to be very simple about it, all right?
So, what we want to do alongside all of those ground forces and that load, when we get to the top, your lead lat is going to be pretty well stretched. That's why we load against the trail side. We're stretching that muscle big time on the way back, and then from here, we can activate both lats.
We can essentially use that to create that squat, that decompression into the ground, core activation. It's going to pull the whole body together, big muscles working down into the ground, and then from there, you can come up and extend, all right? So, the lats are not something that you probably thought about too much in your golf swing.
How well they function, we got to figure it out. So, we have three banded movements for you right here to get right in there and to get them fired up right now. So, number one is going to be the lat pull down.
Okay, you got lots of options for this, all right? You can use a machine. You are isolating, but you can use a machine.
You can use cables. For us, you can use a band, okay? So, this is as simple as it gets.
You can do it in a variety of different ways. Being seated encourages you to create a good neutral spine position, active core, and then you execute from there, all right? So, here, we're just looking to execute well.
This is very, very simple. This is going to get straight into the lats. What you want to look for is the elbows staying close to the body, all right?
As soon as you flare, you're taking into a different kind of movement pattern. You're not putting all of the tension where it needs to be, okay? So, real simple, whichever way you're going to go about it, nice and level, core's going to be braced, active, nice neutral spine, and then it's down and in.
You're basically pulling into the sternum. Elbows are going to stay close. And if you are using that band, hold that tension just for a few seconds at the bottom of the breath, all right?
That time of the tension with the lack of eccentric is going to help you fire up, activate without too much in terms of long-term fatigue. Great way to get it done. Second option is going to directly relate to your rotation and how you activate once you stabilize the lower body, all right?
So, we're going to go into a reverse lunge with the banded rotation. And a couple of keys here, one is creating that stable base when you go into a lunge pattern, again, neutral spine, and then two, you're going to pull with the lats, use that rotation around the spine to create a nice forceful motion, all right? So, one hand's going to wrap in, other over the top, it's going to be that motion.
So, opposing side, you're going to turn over your lead side, all right? So, if your right leg goes back, you're going to turn left over your left leg. From here, stabilize, we set, and turn, okay?
So, be nice and aggressive. You don't have to do it in one motion. Set your position, and then fire your rotation.
Obviously, work both sides, guys, all right? But again, you stabilize the hips, you got good neutral spine, fire through the upper body, pull down and round on those lats, and get that rotation worked up. And movement number three is going to be the pump drill, all right?
Again, use both sides, no matter which way you swing, work both sides, you become a globally better athlete, movement patterns are going to improve, okay? So, looking at this from this side, what you're going to do, set into your golf posture, get into that big, essentially, backswing position, okay? So, we let the band go, we get it to a full turn, active against the ground as you would be for a golf swing, and then from there, you're going to drive the ground, really pull with the lats.
Because of the tension increasing over time, you get massive activation into the lats, exactly what we're looking for. So, up to the top, we squat down, pull, and fire. So, not only an awesome way to get the lats active, to understand what that feels like, it's also going to get the swing in a really good sequence, you're going to use the ground better, and you're going to understand your rotational patterns, all right?
So, again, you can use varied equipment here. Bands are an awesome way to do it because you get more tension at end range, meaning that your awareness, your proprioception of movement is going to be enhanced all the way through the exercise itself, all right? So, from there, you're just going to take it into the swing.
You're going to let yourself get loaded up, and as you do so, try and feel that pull down, all right? Legs have got to go first, you got to maintain that sequence. As we go, we stretch the lead lat.
As we go into our transition, we squat, pull, that pull down motion, not letting the club come over the top. Obviously, you got to have the other technical factors in there, but if we can get up to the top, use our footwork correctly, get down to the ground, and then pull into that strong position, you can let it go. You can get fired up, guys, all right?
And this is what leads into the rest of your training, making sure your body as a whole in the best place for you to play your best golf, but also feel awesome doing it, guys, all right? So, appreciate your time today. Go flex those lats on the range, that's what it's all about.
